Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License. For manual editing SAA parameter files or to compare SAA XSD versions is awesome.
Tabbed document interface
Multiple clipboards (plugin required)
Split screen editing and synchronized scrolling
Spell checker (requires Aspell) (Spell checker does not distinguish between text and code)
Supports text encoding formats such as Unicode, for international writing systems. UTF-8 and several UTF-16 encodings are supported.
Find and replace: with regular expressions (including multi-line); over multiple documents; and marking/summary of occurrences
My favorites features
Support for non printable hexa characters
possibility to search&edit large log files
SAA Parameter file editor
Biggest problem is with null non printed characters in HEXA. Not all editors will show them. SAA parameter file is specific. Even notepad++ is not able to handle with those characters, but those null characters are at least visible. It is interesting that parameter file for autoclient in LITE2 has correct XML syntax without this historic prefix. On the other side, with this prefix you can serialize more parameter files into one which is a way how to increase throughput if you are force to use FILE transfer. To use MQ is much better option.
XML comparison tool
Compare plugin is perfect tool for comparing parameter files, comparing new releases of XSD files etc.
Notepad++ offers much more but this at least is handy for me.
